A Trip to the Natural Food Store

Print

Let's take a trip to the natural food store (the fancy name for "health food store"). These stores carry organic foods, whole foods, organic versions of processed food, and often a variety of near-organic and gourmet foods.

Some items can be found at supermarkets and discount stores such as Wal-Mart. But you'll find many unique items and foods, and it's fun to explore what's different and new.

Finding A Store

Locate the nearest natural food store at the Eat Well Guide.

What's At The Store?

Deli and Juice Bar
Take a visit to the deli and juice bar at a larger natural food store. Try something familiar (like a salad) or unfamiliar (like an exotic pasta salad or a tofu dish).

Organic Fruit
Buy an organic fruit. Not sure which fruit to get? Try an organic apple. In fact, set up a taste test, side by side, between an organic apple and a conventional apple. More on the taste of organic food.

Organic Vegetables
Buy an organic vegetable. How about a bunch of radishes or a bunch of carrots?

Organic Eggs
Supermarkets, as well as natural food stores, often carry organic eggs. You'll find that organic eggs taste better, have a thicker and more egg-like consistency when you break them, have a thicker shell, and store longer. They also have better nutrition. You get the benefit of how the hens were fed and treated.

Organic Dairy
Take a look at the organic dairy section. Here you get the benefit of cows fed nutritious feed, given access to pasture, and not given antibiotics or hormones. Pick from organic milk, organic butter, organic yoghurt, and other dairy items.

Organic Sausage
Organic lunch meat and sausage is made without harmful nitrites. Try one.

Healthy Fats and Oils
Healthy fats are available in the bottled oils section, where there is a selection of organic, expeller-pressed oils; extra-virgin olive oil; ghee, which is clarified butter sold in a jar; and unrefined coconut oil in a jar. Which could you use?

Bread
Check out the bread section. There are whole grain breads, sprouted grain bread, and alternative-grain breads. Do any appeal to you?

Organic Chicken
Easy to bake: organic chicken parts in the meat section. How do you like the taste?

Snacks and Cereals
There will be an extensive selection of organic versions of processed foods: chips, crackers, cookies, cereals, etc. Many supermarkets carry some of these items. Organic versions have fewer and less hazardous additives (per organic standards). They are also more expensive and come in smaller portions, which, along with the lack of additives, can help in cutting back. Is there something similar to what you usually buy?
