The Taste Of Organic Fruits And Vegetables

Print

The taste of organic fruits and vegetables, especially fruit, is usually strikingly better. This is one of the most common reasons to eat organic food.

The Organic Center reports that "better taste" is a reason given by 43% of those who buy organic fruits and vegetables.

Why is the taste better?

  • Greater amount and better mix of phytochemicals and antioxidants in organic produce
  • Organic growing practices allow slower maturing
  • Difference in fertilizer and soil conditions

The Organic Center reviewed human taste test studies comparing conventional and organic fruits and vegetables. These studies are difficult to design and interpret. However, the Organic Center found that when studies found a difference in taste, it was almost always in favor of organic fruits and vegetables.

The Organic Center: Do Organic Fruits and Vegetables Taste Better Than Conventional Fruits and Vegetables?

In my experience, a significant percentage of organic produce has a spectacular taste, while a significant percentage of conventional produce has virtually no taste.

I once accidentally conducted a taste test: I'd brought both conventional and organic apples on a car trip. When I ate one of each at a rest stop, the conventional apple tasted like cardboard in comparison. I never bought conventional apples again.
